Confirm your NRI status
Residential status decides whether your global income is taxable in India. Get an expert opinion before you file.
The basic conditions
- 182 days or more in India in the financial year makes you resident.
- 60 days in the year and 365 days in the preceding 4 years also makes you resident (the 60 days becomes 182 for citizens/PIOs leaving for work abroad or visiting; 120 days if Indian income exceeds ₹15 lakh).
- Deemed residency: Indian citizens with Indian income above ₹15 lakh who are not taxable in any other country are deemed resident (RNOR).
RNOR status
A resident becomes RNOR if they were non-resident in 9 of the last 10 years, or stayed 729 days or less in the last 7 years. RNOR enjoys relief on foreign income. Valuable for returning NRIs.
Limits of this tool
Residential status depends on exact day counts, special cases and your facts. Treat the result as indicative.
