Advance tax rules
If your tax liability after TDS exceeds ₹10,000 you pay advance tax in instalments: 15% by 15 June, 45% (cumulative) by 15 September, 75% by 15 December and 100% by 15 March. Presumptive-scheme taxpayers pay 100% by 15 March. Resident senior citizens without business income are exempt.
Why it matters
Shortfalls attract interest under sections 234B and 234C at 1% per month. Freelancers, professionals, landlords and investors with capital gains are the most common advance-tax payers.
