For most startups, GST registration is the first formal tax step after incorporation. Done properly it takes only a few days; done carelessly it can lead to rejections, queries and delays that stall your first invoices.
Who needs GST registration?
Registration is generally compulsory once your aggregate turnover crosses the threshold prescribed for your state and type of supply (goods or services). Some businesses must register regardless of turnover, for example those making inter-state supplies of goods or services in many cases, casual taxable persons and certain e-commerce operators and sellers.
Even if you are below the threshold, voluntary registration can be worthwhile: it lets you claim Input Tax Credit, sell to registered businesses and build credibility with customers and marketplaces.
Documents you will need
- PAN of the proprietor, partners, directors or the entity
- Aadhaar of the authorised signatory / promoters
- Proof of business registration (certificate of incorporation, partnership deed, etc.)
- Address proof of the principal place of business (electricity bill, property tax receipt or rent/consent agreement)
- Bank account details (cancelled cheque or bank statement)
- Passport-size photographs and a digital signature/EVC for authentication
Step-by-step process
- Prepare details: business name, constitution, nature of business, HSN/SAC codes of your main goods or services.

- Complete Part B: business details, promoters, principal and additional places of business, bank details, and upload documents.
- Authenticate with Aadhaar / DSC / EVC and submit to receive the ARN.
- Track the application. Respond quickly if the officer raises a notice for clarification.
- Receive your GSTIN and registration certificate, then display it at your place of business.
Common reasons for delay
